Mother Tongue
When UNSW lecturer Gabina Funegra decided to investigate the language of her ancestors, she had no idea she was on the way to becoming an award-winning filmmaker.
Gabina Funegra, a lecturer in Spanish and Culture at UNSW’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, travelled to her native Peru to explore the Inca language of Quechua, her mother’s native tongue. Unable to obtain a tape recorder for her interviews, she took a video camera to Peru; the resulting film won her the Best Local Filmmaker award at the 2010 Sydney Latin American Film Festival.
